Synonyms -: hydnocarpus oil, gynocardia oil.


Source -:

Chaulmoogra oil is a fixed oil expressed from the seeds of hydnocourpus wightiana or other species of hydnocorpus (family -: flacourtiaceae).

Geographical occurrence -:

   The plant is tall tree. It grows in india, indochina, burma and thailand,

Preparation -:

1.       The seeds arc cleaned, washed and dried.
2.       The testa are removed after cracking.
3.       The kernels are bcaten to form a paste.
4.       The oil is then expressed in a hydraulic press, filtered and stored in airtight containers.

Characters -:

1.       The oil is yellow or brownish yellow in colour.
2.       It exists as a soft solid below 25°c.
3.       Taste is acid.
4.       It smells almost like rancid butter.

Constituents -:

It is a mixture of glycerides of fatty acids. They are ………
1.       Hydnocorpic acid
2.       Chaulmoogric acid
3.       Gorlic acid
4.       Oleic acid
5.       Palmitic acid

 Uses-: The oil is used for the treatment of leprosy and tuberculosis.
